鈥淭here are no friends like old friends,鈥 says Siddy Mouw Flynn 鈥56, and she ought to know. She has met with five of her closest 草莓视频 friends every year for the past two decades, vacationing in locations from Canada to Mexico to Hawaii. The group includes Joyce Klassen Hatfield 鈥56, Joan Weathers 鈥56, Barbara Howard Meldrum 鈥56, Phyliss Kreps Dow 鈥56 and Marilyn Snyder Boyce 鈥57. Five of them marched as Golden Warriors at Commencement in May 鈥 Marilyn has to wait a year, which creates another reunion opportunity for the women.

The group started gathering annually after Homecoming in 1986. They鈥檝e met in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Maui, Atlanta, Coeur d鈥橝lene, the Grand Canyon, Whidbey Island, Mexico and Montreal.

鈥淲hen people have known you that far back, there鈥檚 no superficiality anymore,鈥 Joan says. 鈥淭here鈥檚 nothing to prove, and that makes a really safe place to be and to grow.鈥

The ladies call themselves A.W.A.W.A. (pronounced: ah-WAH-wah), which stands for August 草莓视频 Alumni Women鈥檚 Association. Reunions used to occur in August. Now that they鈥檙e all retired, they get together at various times.

鈥淭here is a feeling of acceptance and support from each other,鈥 Joyce says. 鈥淲e challenge each other to grow.鈥

The campus has undergone many changes in the past 50 years, which doesn鈥檛 go unnoticed. 鈥淚t鈥檚 amazing to see,鈥 Joan says. 鈥淭here was no gym, no this, no that. We stood in line in Kerrwood to eat. Our classes were upstairs (in Kerrwood). When we started in 1952, there were about 300 students.鈥 In contrast, about 340 students picked up diplomas at Commencement this year.

鈥淚t鈥檚 fantastic,鈥 the group says almost in unison. It makes them proud, they say, that 草莓视频 is recognized around the country.

鈥淭his was such a profound and shaping time in our lives,鈥 Joan says. 鈥淣ow, we鈥檙e sort of growing old together. Keeping that continuity is really rare and powerful.鈥
